July

The enticingly warm colour of Ruby alludes to love, passion and steamy summer nights. Worn as a talisman against evil by royalty, the Ruby has throughout history been amongst the most highly prized gems.

From the Latin word 'ruber', meaning red, the Ruby is a variety of Corundum - the second hardest mineral after Diamond - and comes in many colours. Only the red (orangey red to purplish red) crystals are designated as Rubies, while other colours are considered Sapphires.

The Ruby is the birthstone for July and also the Capricorn zodiac stone.
